梁子馨 (LEONG, Chi-Hing Andreas  1837-1920)
一 八 三 七 年 在 廣 東 南 海 出 生 ， 一 八 五 ０ 年 二 月 進 入 香 港 傳 教 區 修 院 ， 一 八 六 二 年 四 月 廿 五 日 晉 鐸 。 梁 神 父 精 通 拉 丁 語 、 國 語 ， 以 及 其 他 中 國 方 言 ， 例 如 ： 廣 東 話 、 客 家 話 和 鶴 佬 話 。 曾 經 伴 同 和 神 父 一 起 進 行 地 方 考 察 ， 繪 製 新 安 縣 地 圖 。 一 八 六 八 至 一 八 七 ０ 年 間 在 赤 徑 和 新 安 工 作 ， 並 於 一 八 七 四 年 在 歸 善 城 工 作 。 一 八 七 五 年 ， 他 陪 同 高 主 教 往 中 國 北 方 週 遊 訪 問 ， 為 處 理 香 港 傳 教 區 的 債 務 問 題 。 一 八 七 七 年 ， 在 惠 州 工 作 ， 一 八 八 二 年 ， 又 到 白 沙 澳 ， 直 至 一 八 九 ０ 年 ， 並 於 一 八 九 八 年 重 返 主 教 座 堂 。 一 九 一 二 年 ， 適 逢 晉 鐸 金 慶 ， 前 往 羅 馬 ， 領 受 「宗 座 傳 教 士」 的 榮 銜 。 於 一 九 二 ０ 年 五 月 十 五 日 逝 世 。

Father Andrew Leong

We regret to announce the death, on Saturday last, of the Rev. Father Andrew Leong, of the Catholic Mission in Hong Kong. The deceased was 83 years old and was very well known to the Chinese community, being one of the oldest residents of the Colony. He was born in 1837, in a village near Canton, and came over to Hong Kong with his parents soon after the cession of the island to the British. His family has professed the Christian faith for several generations and Father Andrew showed an early inclination for the priesthood. He entered the Catholic Seminary at 14 and was the first, and for some time, the only pupil. Studious energetic, and intelligent, he passed in Latin, Philosophy, and Theology with great success, and was ordained a priest on the 25^th April, 1862. From that time he worked unceasingly with the late Vicars Apostolic, Msgr. Raimondi, and Msgr. Piazzoli, and with the present Msgr. Pozzoni in the various Districts of the Vicariate. He was also well versed in Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, and the Hoklo dialects.

Possessed of an active and cheerful disposition, besides being endowed with great tact and common sense, he proved to be a most valuable coadjutor and wise counselor. Eight years ago Father Andrew celebrated his golden sacerdotal jubilee, on which occasion he received a high honour from the Pope in recognition of his long and faithful labours.

The late Father Leong traveled and preached throughout Southern China but during the last few years he exercised his ministry in Hong Kong where he was in charge of the Chinese community, by whom he was very much loved and esteemed for his exemplary, active and zealous life.

The funeral took place at the Happy Valley on Sunday evening when enormous crowds followed his remains to the grave. The ceremony was conducted by His Lordship Bishop Pozzoni and there were present all the priests and seminaries of the Catholic Missions, the Fathers of the French Mission and of the Spanish Procuration, the teachers and pupils of St. Joseph’s College, Italian and French Convents, Wanchai Convent, and of St. Mary’s, St. Anthony’s and St. Lewis’ Schools, besides several thousands of Chinese Catholics, a large number of foreign friends of the deceased, and representative of the various Catholic Societies.

一 八 九 二 年 梁 神 父 子 馨 奉 命 調 港 。 神 父 原 籍 廣 東 南 海 縣 人 ， 移 居 香 港 ， 祖 先 奉 教 ， 公 年 十 四 入 修 院 ， 天 資 聰 穎 ， 一 八 六 一 年 晉 鐸 。 除 拉 丁 文 外 ， 能 通 各 種 方 言 ， 五 十 年 金 慶 時 ， 得 教 宗 特 諭 嘉 許 ， 到 邑 傳 教 ， 前 後 二 十 年 ， 性 甚 和 靄 ， 言 語 輕 細 ， 接 納 教 友 ， 極 有 愛 情 ， 維 持 教 務 ， 富 有 力 量 ， 面 前 不 說 人 非 ， 每 於 講 道 時 ， 設 喻 勸 誨 ， 口 舌 鋒 利 ， 文 藝 優 長 。 是 年 奉 命 調 港 ， 在 港 長 住 ， 至 一 九 二 ０ 年 ， 在 港 逝 世 。 享 壽 八 十 三 歲 ， 葬 於 香 港 跑 馬 地 。
