Death of Father Riganti, P.I.M.E.
R.I.P.

Father Anthony Riganti, PIME, one of the most distinguished priests ever to work in Hong Kong, died in St. Paul’s Hospital, Causeway Bay, in the morning of 20 July 1965, aged 72.

Father Riganti was born on 27 October 1893, in Sesto Calende, Milan, Italy. He entered the Milan diocesan seminary in 1905, joined the PIME Society in 1913, and was ordained priest on 18 March 1916.

He served in Albania in the last two years of World War I, first with the Red Cross, later as an army chaplain.

He arrived in Hong Kong in January 1920 and spent practically all the rest of his life here. He went first to the Cathedral as choir-master. In 1923 he was sent to teach in the diocesan seminary.

In January 1927 he was made parish priest of St. Joseph’s Church, Garden Road, a post which he held for over 21 years.

In November 1933 he was appointed Pro-Vicar General of Hong Kong.

In September 1948 he was recalled to Milan as Assistant to the PIME Superior General, but was permitted to return in the November of the following year to Hong Kong, where he became parish priest of St. Margaret’s, Happy Valley, and PIME Procurator for Hong Kong.

After the death of Bishop Valtorta on 4 September 1951, Bishop Bianchi being under arrest in Communist China, Father Riganti was appointed Vicar General with the fullest powers by the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith.

Bishop Bianchi, on his release from detention in December 1952, confirmed the appointment of Father Riganti as Vicar General.

In March 1954 Father Riganti was appointed PIME Regional Superior in Hong Kong.

In September 1959, he obtained leave to resign his position as Vicar General, on grounds of declining health.

Two years later, in September 1961, he resigned as parish priest of St. Margaret’s on grounds of serious illness.

After resignation, Father Riganti still did as much work as his deteriorating health allowed. His last undertaking was the active supervision of the work of preparing a new diocesan hymnal.

He spent his last few months in hospital, first in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kowloon, and at the end in St. Paul’s. For some time he suffered severely, but the end was painless, untroubled, and, as might have been foreseen, full of a gaiety based on lively faith.

The long roll of the responsible posts he held gives some idea of Father Riganti’s great gifts as an administrator and as a pastor. It gives no idea at all of the high culture, dignity, and charm of manner, that were no less characteristic of him.

Throughout his very long residence here he was always one of the chief musicians in Hong Kong, a pianist and a composer of unusual delicacy and skill.

As an administrator he could be firm but he could not be discourteous. Courtesy and sincere kindliness seemed to build into his whole character, and through these virtues his genuine charity shone forth. Thus, though he always shunned the limelight, he attracted admiring affections wherever he went.

He leaves not only a legacy of great work done but also undying memories of deep friendship that will fortify many in years yet to come.

A very large congregation attended the Requiem Mass celebrated for the repose of his soul in St. Margaret’s on Wednesday, 21 July, and the funeral to St. Michael’s Happy Valley, after the Mass.

前 香 港 教 區 副 主 教 ， 聖 瑪 加 利 大 堂 主 任 司 鐸 戴 遐 齡 神 父 ， 於 一 九 六 五 年 七 月 二 十 日 患 喉 癌 不 治 逝 世 ， 享 年 七 十 二 歲 。

教 區 當 局 於 本 月 廿 一 日 下 午 五 時 正 假 聖 瑪 加 利 大 堂 為 亡 者 舉 行 追 思 大 禮 彌 撒 ， 六 時 遺 體 安 葬 跑 馬 地 墳 場 。

戴 神 父 供 職 香 港 教 區 逾 四 十 年 ， 曾 先 後 在 恩 主 教 、 白 主 教 任 內 出 任 副 主 教 ， 任 期 長 達 廿 三 年 ， 對 教 區 之 建 設 及 二 次 大 戰 後 之 恢 復 及 發 展 ， 貢 獻 殊 多 。

一 九 五 一 年 九 月 恩 主 教 逝 世 後 ， 直 至 翌 年 十 二 月 白 主 教 自 大 陸 返 港 ， 戴 神 父 署 理 教 務 。

戴 神 父 於 一 八 九 三 年 生 於 義 大 利 米 蘭 市 郊 。 十 二 歲 入 米 蘭 教 區 小 修 院 ， 後 矢 志 赴 海 外 傳 教 ， 轉 入 米 蘭 外 方 傳 教 會 ， 一 九 一 六 年 晉 鐸 。 時 值 大 戰 期 間 ， 乃 參 加 紅 十 字 會 救 護 工 作 ， 奉 派 前 往 阿 爾 巴 尼 亞 ， 戰 後 留 該 地 供 職 於 隨 軍 司 鐸 部 ， 一 九 一 八 年 杪 退 役 。

一 九 二 ０ 年 奉 派 來 港 ， 首 先 擔 任 總 堂 歌 詠 團 指 導 ， 一 九 二 三 年 起 兼 任 教 區 小 修 院 教 師 。 一 九 二 七 年 一 月 昇 任 花 園 道 聖 若 瑟 堂 主 任 司 鐸 ， 一 九 三 三 年 昇 任 副 主 教 。

一 九 四 八 至 四 九 年 曾 回 米 蘭 擔 任 宗 座 外 方 傳 教 會 總 會 長 助 理 ， 一 九 五 ０ 年 再 度 來 港 服 務 ， 出 任 聖 瑪 加 利 大 堂 區 主 任 司 鐸 。

一 九 五 一 年 九 月 三 日 恩 理 覺 主 教 逝 世 ， 戴 神 父 奉 羅 馬 傳 信 部 命 再 度 出 任 副 主 教 ， 署 理 教 區 事 務 ， 翌 年 十 二 月 白 主 教 返 港 後 ， 留 任 副 主 教 。

一 九 五 九 年 九 月 戴 神 父 以 年 高 體 弱 ， 辭 去 副 主 教 職 ， 二 年 後 再 辭 去 聖 瑪 加 利 大 堂 主 任 司 鐸 職 。
