Fond farewell to long serving Maryknoller

Maryknoll Father Anthony V. Brennan, assistant Parish Priest at Christ the Worker Parish, Ngau Tau Kok, died on 19 May 2015 while visiting some religious sisters in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on his way home for a vacation. He was 80-years-old.

Father Brennan was born on 25 March 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, the United States of America (US). He entered Maryknoll in September 1952 and was ordained a priest on 10 June 1961 having earned both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Religious Education Degrees.

Father Brennan was assigned to Hong Kong. He studied the Cantonese language and, in 1968 became rector of the then-new parish, St. John the Baptist in Kwun Tong. He also was parish priest of the now defunct St. Peter’s Parish, Kowloon Tsai, a member of the pastoral team and later parish priest at St. Matthew the Apostle Parish, Tuen Mun, he also served at St. Patrick’s parish, Wang Tau Hom, and, following his retirement on 1 January 2001, at Christ the Worker Parish, Ngau Tau Kok.

For most of his missionary career, Father Brennan was posted in Hong Kong, this included an appointment as second regional assistant and director of Maryknoll House, Stanley. He also made the rounds at the United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, ministering to patients twice a week.

He became interested in the Marriage Encounter movement and worked with the Catholic Marriage Advisory Council.

In 1990, he returned to the US to work with Maryknoll’s Development Department, returning to Hong Kong after four years.

Parishioners in Ngau Tau Kok fondly remember him as a father-figure who was always available with a big hug and a broad smile.

Anyone who met him for the first time was in for a big surprise. He would hold shake hands and holding their palms amaze them by revealing to them what he had discerned of their life stories. This was a special gift by which he won the hearts of the people around him.

His parishioners and friends, especially the Maryknollers in Hong Kong will miss him dearly.
