Farewell to a long-serving Salesian priest
Father Bernard Tohill, of the Salesians of Don Bosco died
peacefully at 7pm on 21 December 2010 in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern
Hospital, Hong Kong. He was 91-years-old. He was a Salesian for 73 years and a
priest for 62 years.
Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Father Tohill arrived in China in 1937. He was rector of the Aberdeen Technical School, Aberdeen, and St. Louis School, West Point, before his election as provincial of the China province. Later, he was transferred to the San Francisco province as its provincial. In 1965, he was made superior of the English-speaking region and in 1971, the superior of Salesian Missions in Rome.
Afterward, he returned to Hong Kong and retired to Braga House in Shaukeiwan. His contribution to the Salesian Society and especially the China province is most valuable.
A requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s church, West Point, on Thursday, 6 January, at 8pm. The funeral Mass will also be held at St. Anthony’s Church on 7 January, at 10am, and burial will follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Happy Valley.
