Brother Cornelius F.S.C.
Educator: Hong Kong 1900-1919 – East Asia 1900-1969
After 71 years spent in
the Far East, Reverend Brother Cornelius Nulty, F.S.C., peacefully passed away
in Penang on 14 October 1971. He arrived in Hong Kong in 1900 to teach at St.
Joseph’s College where his ability and marked success as a teacher of the
Cambridge classes drew the attention of his superiors. He left Hong Kong in 1919
to begin a thirty years stretch as Director and Headmaster of various schools
conducted by the Brothers in Burma and Malaya. He was born in Ireland and took
the Holy Habit of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1898. Brother
Cornelius was a born teacher, devoted to the work of education and loved the
classroom. Up to two years before his death, he was physically spry and mentally
alert and was able to teach several periods of English in the private school
attached to St. Xavier’s Penang. May the Good Lord, whom he has served so
loyally and faithfully over these many years in the field of Christian education
in the Far East, reward him abundantly.
