Birth in Ireland:
Death of Father Edward McElroy
Father Edward McElroy, assistant parish priest of St. Joseph’s Church, died in the Queen Mary Hospital on Saturday 22 November 1980, after a brief illness, aged 70.
He had been attached to St. Joseph’s for less than two years, but the many expressions of personal loss evoked by the news of his death showed that the parishioners had taken him to their hearts. He was simple, unassuming, shrewd, compassionate, gently humourous, understanding, companionable and zealous - an array of priestly qualities seldom found in one man.
Father McElroy joined the Columban Missionaries in Ireland as a young man. He was ordained priest in 1935 and left for the Chinese missions in the following year. He worked in China for 18 years, first in Kiangsi and later in Shanghai, acquiring great facility in written and spoken Chinese, and bearing a heavy burden of anxiety and responsibility in the tumultuous years of his stay. For his last two years in Shanghai he was under house arrest.
He was expelled by the Communist government on 15 May 1954.
After his expulsion he worked for some years as a chaplain to Irish immigrant workers in England. Next he joined the Columban missions in Peru, where he worked among the poorest of the poor and assisted in the growth of the Basic Christian Community movement that has done so much for the vitality of the faith in Latin America.
He came to Hong Kong in 1974 to care for the needs of his fellow Columbans in Burma. Here, as everywhere else, he accepted every chance of working for and with the Legion of Mary; one of the great loves of his life. Early last year, he joined the staff of St. Joseph’s Church, quickly making a host of friends.
He had a host of friends everywhere he worked. Nevertheless, he had left his heart in China. The people he had worked for there were dearest to his heart. His greatest sorrow in recent years was his inability to meet and serve them. He treasured every item of news about them, and his last years were lightened by admiring and compassionate gratitude for their staunch faith under overwhelming difficulties.
His passing will be widely mourned in many places and his memory will be long cherished.
Peace be to his soul!
