Brother Felix Sheehan
R.I.P.

Brother Felix Sheehan, F.S.C., for over 30 years one of the most admired educationalists in Hong Kong, died in Ireland at noon on Monday, 16 June 1986 after a long illness.

Before Christmas 1984, Brother Felix went to Oxford where the Brothers have a home for Vietnam refugees. He joined the staff and was happy to be of help. However, after a few months his health began to cause concern, and in the early summer of 1985 he had to undergo a series of tests. Towards the end of the year it was found he had cancer of the stomach. He accepted the news with a resignation that those who knew him could scarcely have anticipated. He went to Ireland to the Brothers’ Clinic, where excellent facilities are provided for old or ill Brothers. He maintained an abiding interest in Hong Kong and in people and events and was most grateful for the many remembrances received from his friends in the area. He was laid to rest on a beautiful summer’s day in the Brothers’ cemetery in the presence of an unusually large gathering of relatives, friends and Brothers.

Brother Felix was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1912. At the age of 18 he left home to join the Brothers, which he did in due course. He was the only boy in a family of four. After initial training he came to Hong Kong in the mid-thirties. When war broke out he made his way to Indo-China where he taught in some of the Brothers’ well-known schools. At war’s end he returned to Ireland, malaria-ridden and run-down in health. His native air soon restored him, and he entered the University where he took a degree in History. After that he returned to Kuching, Sarawak.

In 1952 he joined the staff of St. Joseph’s College, Hong Kong. In 1956 he went to La Salle College as Principal. The Brothers were then living in Perth Street and the school functioned in huts not far away. It will be recalled that La Salle College had to be vacated for use as a hospital at the outbreak of the Korean War. Brother Felix worked, slaved, to get the College back from the army. The stack of correspondence still extant bears testimony to this. Getting the building back was one thing; converting it from a hospital to a school was another. He worked tirelessly until eventually he had it lookking like a school. His nine years as Principal saw the College grow and prosper in all fields including Scouting, Red Cross, St. John Ambulance and games.

When transferred from La Salle he acquired a site in Fanling on which he built a secondary school which responded to a long-felt need in that area. He presided over the destiny of that school for a further six years and in the interim made a host of friends.

In 1972 he returned to La Salle where he joined the staff and taught the usual lessons alongside his former colleagues. On reaching the mandatory retirement age he did part-time teaching in the Hang Seng School of Commerce, Shatin, until the end of ’84 when he left for Oxford. Newcomers to education in Hong Kong found him endlessly generous in giving them the benefit of his vast experience and his mature judgment.

Brother Felix had many admirable virtues, in particular his unfailing thoughtfulness for others especially the sick, the lonely and those in trouble.

Mass for Brother Felix will be offered in La Salle College on Monday, 30 June 6pm. All are welcome.
