In memory of Father Giuliano Carpella S.D.B.
R.I.P.

A Salesian of Don Bosco for 67 years and a missionary to China for 68 years, Father Giuliano Carpella died on 11 April 2006 at St. Paul’s Hospital, with the rector of his community by his side. He had celebrated is 83 birthday on his sick-bed only three days before.

A vigil Mass was celebrated on 18 April in Christ the King Chapel, with the Salesian provincial, Father Savio Hon SDB, as the main celebrant and homilist. The funeral Mass was held next day, 19 April, in the same chapel. Joseph Cardinal Zen SDB, bishop of Hong Kong, presided and preached the homily. Burial followed in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley.

Father Giuliano was born in Tesero, a mountain village in Italy’s Alpine province of Trent.

He came to China as a 15-year-old in 1938, probably a record-breaking age in the history of Catholic missions. After one year of novitiate in Hong Kong, he became a Salesian in 1939. He was ordained a priest in Shanghai in 1949, just one month after the coming to power of the current government. He then served at Chapei district, Shanghai, Shaukeiwan Salesian Missionary House, Aberdeen Technical School and St. Louis School, until 1963. For the next three years, the newly opened Salesian House of Cavalese, Italy, demanded his services, after which he was master of novices in the Salesian province of The Philippines for a few years. Back in Hong Kong, he worked in the Salesian House of Studies as vice-rector and prefect of studies from 1970, and from 1976 to 1982 was rector and principal St. Louis School. From1981 to 1988 he was provincial procurator.

His active life was followed by retirement at Braga House in Shaukeiwan and at St. Mary’s Home for the Aged in Aberdeen.

The Salesians are grateful to the Little Sisters of the Poor and their helpers and to the Sisters of St. Paul’s Hospital and the medical staff for the tender care they gave Father Carpella during his old age and illness. The Salesians, members of the Salesian Family and his past pupils remember Father Carpella as a beloved brother and a loving father, a dedicated teacher, an eloquent preacher, a gifted musician, a zealous pastor, a silent sufferer, a gentlemen and a friend.
