Father John MAI Nghi Luan
A Taipei diocesan priest, Father John Mai Nghi Luan
died of a stroke at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 11 April 1996. He was 58 years old and a

Father Mai was born in Thanh Hoa, North Vietnam on 21 August 1937, the fourth of six children in a family that had been Catholic for several generations. His father died when he was very young.
In 1954 the whole family fled to South Vietnam where in 1957 he entered the seminary and began his studies in philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest on 26 May 1967.
From 1968 to 1975 Father Mai served as professor at the minor seminary in Nhatrang, and as principal of a secondary school and parish priest in Phan Rang, central Vietnam.
In 1975 after North Vietnam invaded the south, Father John Mai encountered many difficulties in his pastoral work. He fled the country in 1980 and settled in the United States in 1981.
From 1981 to 1988 he was chaplain for the Vietnamese communities in Iowa and Ohio. In 1988 he was transferred to Honolulu, Hawaii and became pastor of St. Teresa’s Church.
In 1990 he volunteered to go to Taiwan where he became spiritual director of Vietnamese seminarians while he studied mandarin.
In 1992 Father Mai came to Hong Kong to serve Vietnamese asylumseekers. It was while heavily involved in this apostolate that Father Mai suffered the stoke which led to his death.
