Father John D. Hines, M.M.
Father John Hines, the Parish Priest of Mother of Christ Parish in Sheung Shui and acting Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Parish in Fanling, died of a heart attack on 5 September 1994. He was 45 years old and had been a Maryknoll priest for 16 years.
Father Hines was born on 18 October 1948 in Lynn, Massachusetts, U.S.A. the only son in a family of four children. He attended St. Mary’s Boys High School in Lynn and graduated in 1966. That same year he entered the University of Massachusetts where in June of 1970 he was awarded the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology.
In the fall of 1970 Father Hines was accepted as a candidate for the priesthood in the Maryknoll Society and was sent to the Maryknoll Seminary at Glen Ellyn, Illinois, for a year of pretheological studies in philosophy and scripture. The following year he entered the Maryknoll Novitiate in Higham, Massachusetts and on 13 May 1972 he pronounced his first oath of membership in the Maryknoll Society.
From 1972 to 1974, Father Hines studied theology at the Maryknoll Seminary in New York after which he entered the special Maryknoll Overseas Training Program for future missionaries in Taiwan. He returned to the Maryknoll Seminary in 1977 where he completed his final year of theological studies and was ordained a priest on 20 May 1978.
Father Hines’ first mission assignment as a priest was to Taiwan where he made a promising start as a missioner. But his time there was to be short as the needs of Hong Kong beckoned to him. On 1 December 1979, Father Hines was assigned to Hong Kong where he spent the rest of his mission life.
Father Hines first assignment in Hong Kong after language studies was as assistant Parish Priest at Resurrection Parish in Kowloon and not long after as pastor of Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish in Shun Lee. In 1989, Father Hines went to Rome for a year of study in theology and spirituality. Following his year in Rome, Father Hines worked for two years in the Archdiocese of Boston at Saint James Church with special responsibility for the Chinese Catholic Community of the Archdiocese.
In the fall of 1992 Father Hines returned to Hong Kong where early in 1993 he was appointed Parish Priest of Saint Joseph’s Parish in Fanling. In February of 1994, he was assigned as acting Parish Priest of Mother of Christ Parish in Sheung Shui.
Father Hines final appointment came on 15 June this year when he was appointed Parish Priest of Mother of Christ Parish and acting Parish Priest of Saint Joseph’s Parish, Fanling.
A wake service and funeral Mass was held at Father Hines’ Parish on Friday, 9 September and his body was returned to the United States for burial.
