Father Jose Rios Blanco, O.P.
R.I.P.

Father Jose Rios Blanco, OP died in Manila on 14 May 1997.

He was born seventy-eight years ago at Morales del Rey in the Province of Zamora in Spain. At the age of eleven he entered the Apostolic School (or minor seminary) of the Province of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Dominican Order.

He received the habit of the Order of Preachers in Avila in 1934, where he was later professed and began his priestly studies.

These Brother Jose continued at St. Albert
s Priory, Rosaryhill, Hong Kong having arrived here in June 1936. He remained in Hong Kong as a student except for a brief period in Macau during the Second World War. He was ordained priest by Bishop Henry Valtorta on 4 March 1944.

Father Rios received the Dominican degree of Lector in Sacred Theology that same year. He taught ethics for a brief period but was sent to Manila in 1946 to study economics at the University of Santo Tomas.

From 1946 to 1989 with one title or another he was constantly involved in the financial administration of his Province.

He returned to Hong Kong in 1971. In 1974 he became procurator of the Dominican missions in the Far East.

He was superior of St. Joseph
s House, Kowloon Tong from 1971 to 1977 and again from 1990 to 1993.

Having gained a good reputation as a preacher and confessor during his Philippine years, he was in constant demand for apostolic work while serving as rector of St. Joseph Chapel.

Father Jose instructed and baptised many converts, prepared children for First Holy Communion and directed countless devout souls. He took great interest in the Dominican laity. For all these works, he had begun to learn to read, write and speak Cantonese when he was already over fifty years old.

Taken ill late in 1996 he was sent to Manila where he died less than five-months later of terminal cancer.

Quiet, unassuming, meticulous and regular in all his ways, Father Rios was nonetheless compassionate and generous, affable and kind to those in need.

The Funeral Mass in Hong Kong was presided over by Cardinal John Baptist Wu at Roasryhill School Chapel, Hong Kong on 20 May.

May he go from strength to strength and see the God of gods in Son!
