Father Peter Alphonsus Reilly, M. M.

Father Peter A. Reilly died in St. Teresa’s Hospital, Hong Kong, of cardiac arrest on Sunday evening, 20 June 1994. He was 82 years of age and a Maryknoll priest for 54 years.

Peter Alphonsus was born in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., on 15 July 1912. After attending Catholic primary and secondary schools and completing two years of university study, he entered Maryknoll Major Seminary in New York on 11 September 1933. He was ordained a Maryknoll priest on 16 June 1940, at Maryknoll Seminary.

Following ordination, Father Reilly was assigned to the Maryknoll Vicariate Apostolic of Wuchow in Kwangsi Province, South China. After a year of language and cultural studies in Hong Kong he arrived in Wuchow in September 1941. As Vicar General of the Wuchow Vicariate, he assisted Bishop Frederick A. Donaghy in establishing the first Kwangsi Catholic mission school, Scared Heart Primary School.

In November of 1949, Communist forces occupied Wuchow and although free, Father Reilly spent the next two years under close scrutiny by the new government. In December of 1952, he was expelled to Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, Father Reilly was first given a diocesan parish assignment. But when the Maryknoll Fathers were asked to concentrate on caring for the refugees pouring into Hong Kong, Father Reilly joined his confreres who along with their spiritual ministry to the refugees, were setting up relief stations and establishing schools. He chose Kowloontsai as his location where he started building a primary school and rented a Mass centre. The school was still in the building stage when the government asked him to add a secondary school to the building plans. The result of this was the Maryknoll Fathers School which Father Reilly lovingly developed into one of the outstanding secondary schools in Hong Kong and where he lived for most of his 41 years in Hong Kong.

From Kowloontsai, Father Reilly established St. John the Baptist Parish in Kwun Tong which was beginning to develop as an industrial area. He also secured land to establish a number of primary schools in that area.

Until the time of his death, Father Reilly continued to run his Kowlontsai Mass centre as a part of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Because of his dedicated service, he will be sorely missed by many.

您 返 抵 天 鄉 十 五 年 ， 您 的 音 容 在 我 的 記 憶 中 仍 舊 清 晰 ， 我 深 信 您 同 樣 掛 念 著 我 們 每 一 個 人 ， 父 親 又 怎 會 忘 掉 自 己 的 兒 女 呢 ？ 去 年 聖 老 楞 佐 堂 的 建 堂 主 任 司 鐸 馬 廸 理 神 父 離 世 後 ， 我 對 這 位 素 未 謀 面 的 神 長 表 現 得 異 常 親 切 ， 緊 張 地 張 羅 ， 搜 集 他 生 前 的 相 片 和 資 料 ， 好 能 作 嚴 謹 的 報 導 。 這 當 然 是 對 一 位 偉 人 的 尊 敬 ， 但 最 主 要 是 因 為 您 和 馬 神 父 十 分 相 似 。 在 報 導 馬 神 父 的 同 時 ， 我 在 訴 說 著 對 您 的 尊 敬 、 懷 念 和 愛 慕 。

整 整 十 五 年 了 ， 每 年 的 父 親 節 前 夕 ， 您 的 追 思 彌 撒 都 凝 聚 了 敬 愛 您 的 舊 生 和 教 友 ， 人 數 由 漸 減 到 漸 增 。 漸 漸 減 少 是 因 為 長 者 們 可 以 面 對 面 與 您 相 聚 ， 漸 漸 增 多 是 因 為 成 家 的 舊 生 結 伴 攜 幼 前 來 。 場 面 亦 由 哀 傷 漸 變 聚 舊 良 機 ， 沒 有 改 變 的 是 每 人 心 中 對 您 那 份 敬 重 ， 愛 慕 和 感 恩 。

Reilly (賴 存 忠 神 父) ， 感 激 您 對 貧 苦 莘 莘 學 子 那 份 摯 誠 的 關 愛 ； 感 謝 您 以 身 作 則 、 刻 骨 銘 心 的 教 誨 ； 感 激 您 無 私 的 奉 獻 ， 恪 守 神 貧 精 神 、 高 尚 人 格 、 嚴 謹 的 道 德 操 守 ， 但 開 明 並 包 容 地 處 事 待 人 ； 感 激 您 對 人 的 信 任 和 尊 重 ， 不 放 棄 任 何 一 個 學 生 、 牧 養 的 羊 群 ； 感 謝 您 對 教 育 的 熱 忱 和 承 擔 ， 對 使 命 、 理 想 的 執 著 和 堅 持 ， 提 供 優 質 的 教 育 …… 雖 然 我 們 對 您 依 依 不 捨 ， 但 我 們 的 悲 傷 漸 退 ， 因 為 我 們 在 慶 祝 一 位 「聖 人」 在 天 上 的 誕 辰 。 天 主 聖 父 在 父 親 節 的 黃 昏 把 您 接 回 ， 使 我 們 能 夠 繼 續 為 您 「慶 祝」 父 親 節 。

Fr. Reilly ， 我 們 的 慈 父 ， 父 親 節 快 樂 ！ 您 的 子 女 正 努 力 學 習 您 的 榜 樣 ， 請 繼 續 扶 持 我 們 ！

賴 存 忠 神 父 (1912-1994) 是 瑪 利 諾 神 父 教 會 學 校 (中 、 小 學) 的 創 校 校 監 ， 大 坑 東 九 龍 仔 彌 撒 中 心 的 主 任 司 鐸 ， 亦 創 立 觀 塘 聖 若 翰 堂 及 區 內 數 間 學 校 。
