Death of Dominican Priest
Father Tomas Labayen, O.P.
Father Tomas Labayen, OP, passed away at St.
Paul’s Hospital on 25 June 1987.
Born in Guipuzcoa (Spain) on 7 March 1915, Tomas entered the Dominican Order in 1931. As a young Theology student he came to Hong Kong, being ordained priest by Mgr. Enrique Valtorta in 1938.
Father Labayen was a missionary through and through. For 30 years he laboured in Vietman, preaching the Gospel and engaging in Christian social work. During the troubled years of the war he suffered with the people, helping them in all possible ways, until he was forced to leave the Mission.
In 1976 Father Labayen came back to Hong Kong, assigned to the Dominicans’ Provincial House in Kowloon. While attending to his official duties he found time to organize various worthwhile projects for the benefit of the Vietnamese refugees who had started to pour into Hong Kong.
In November 1984 Father Labayen suffered a stroke. After two surgical operations he sunk into a deep coma, from which he never recovered.
The Funeral Mass, held at Rosaryhill Chapel, was presided over by Bishop Wu, with the Dominican Fathers and a number of priests from other congregations as concelebrants. Also present was the Consul General of Spain. Father Labayen was buried at the Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley.
