Sister Benigna Gallant R.G.S.
Peals of laughter are especially joyous in Heaven today for wherever Sister Benigna is there is certainly fun and joy.
Sister Benigna was born Hilda Gallant on 12 October 1898 in Prince Edward Island, a bright, free spirit with a love of life and adventure that served her well in her long journeying in the footsteps of the Good shepherd.
While we can truly say she belonged to all nations, she never forgot her roots and was overjoyed when a Canadian was elected Superior General at the last Chapter.
Sister Benigna joined the Good Shepherd Congregation in New York in 1921 where an older sister, Sister Maurice, had preceded her. The foreign missions were already beckoning her, and, as a young novice, she was sent to the novitiate in Angers. There she made her first vows on 1 February 1926.
Sister Benigna’s first mission land was Sri Lanka where she taught in St. Bridget’s School for many years.
From there she went to Burma, working in more than one community and spending the war years in jungle areas. Sister Benigna would amuse and enthrall us with endless stories of these difficult years but difficulties were adventures for her.
The Lord she loved was with her and nothing could dampen her good humour.
After the war, Sister spent some years in India. Then in 1957 she was missioned to break new grounds in Malaysia. The flourishing Good Shephered presence there today bears tribute to Sister Benigna’s twenty years of fidelity where she gave without counting the cost, fought without heeding the wounds, laboured without seeking reward.
Already nearing her 80 birthday, still young at hearty, and light in step, Sister Benigna joined the new foundation in Macau. Her prayerful example, indomitable good humour, her thirst 60 spread the Good News and her love of community life brightened hearts and inspired a desire for fullness of life in all around her, both inside and outside the convent.
In 1985 Sister’s health began to fail, she knocked on Heaven’s Gate several times, but at a signal that her hour had not yet come, she would bound back giving us many surprises.
In October 1989 at the age of 91, Sister was missioned to the newly formed Community of Maria Droste for our infirm and senior Sisters in Aberdeen, Hong Kong.
There Sister enjoyed the last years of a long and full life, there the desire to be with the Lord who had carried her on Eagle’s Wings grew stronger. Even up to the end her face would light up as she would join in singing:
My heart is full
You have been within my life
Your guiding hand has always covered me,
I am full of confidence in you…
Sister was called to eternal life on 2 June 1992.
