Farewell to joyful educator

Sister Carmen Lau passed away peacefully in the Infirmary of Canossian Missions, Villa Bakhita, on 1 May 2009. She was 88-years-old.

Sister Carmen was born in Mexico on 1 August 1920 to a good Catholic family that laid good religious foundations in her heart. Her father was Chinese while her mother was Mexican. During World War II, her whole family moved to Macau where Carmen studied at the Sacred Heart School (Chinese Section) run by the Canossian Sisters. From 1945 to 1948, she completed her secondary education as a boarder at the Sacred Heart School (English Section).

She was simple and joyful by nature and, as a boarder, lived close to the sisters. She was attracted by their prayerful and joyful life. She joined the Canossian family at the novitiate in Kowloon on 30 October 1948 and made her first profession on 8 December 1951.

Her first assignment was with the little ones of Sacred Heart Holy Childhood, after three years she was sent to Wanchai to teach catechism and to supervise the children there.

Between 1956 and 1971 she was in Macau, first with the orphans and then as head of Pui Ching School of Casa Beneficiencia. She then went to Italy for six months for a period of ongoing formation. Upon her return, she was assigned to teach catechism in Shaukeiwan until 1974, when she was again sent to Macau, first to the Sacred Heart School and then to Escola Canossa.

In 1983, she returned to Hong Kong and worked at Ling Yuet Sin, teaching in the kindergarten and as a pastoral sister in St. Anthony’s Parish for over 10 years. In 1994, with the closure of the Ling Yuet Sin community, she was transferred to Villa Bakhita, but continued to go to St. Anthony’s, until her health prevented her from continuing. Her health gradually deteriorated and a few strokes finally confined her to the wheelchair and later to her bed.

During her active years, Sister Carmen loved music, singing, dancing and was very good at drawing. The children of the kindergarten loved her and she had a great zeal to “make Jesus known and loved.”

Though her health had been progressively deteriorating, her death came almost suddenly, without much warning. It seems that Our Lady desired to have her in heaven to begin the month of May and sing God’s praises.

The funeral Mass for Sister Carmen was held on May 4 at 3.00pm in the chapel of the Canossian Missions, Caine Road, followed by burial at the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery at Happy Valley.

The Canossian Sisters thank the readers, relatives and friends for their prayers for the repose of her soul. May she rest in peace.
