Dorothy Walsh, M.M.
Sister Dorothy Walsh, M.M., died at Maryknoll Residential Care on 18 December 1994 at 9:20pm of cardiac and respiratory arrest. She was eighty-five years of age and a professed Maryknoll Sister for 66 years.
Sister Dorothy was born on 25 February 1908 in Kokomo, Indiana, U.S.A. In 1926, one year after graduating from secondary school, she entered Maryknoll where she made her first professional in 1928 and her final profession in 1931.
After completing her university studies at Mount Saint Vincent’s College in New York, Sister Dorothy began her teaching career in 1932 in Honolulu, Hawaii. This was followed by eight years of service in Hong Kong at the Maryknoll Convent School in Kowloon. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, Sister Dorothy was interned for eight months. On her release, she escaped into China and worked in Kweiliin, Kweijing and Chungking. Her China workwas interrupted in January 1945, when she was assigned to India to work in Calcutta and Simla. Shortly after the Second World War ended, Sister Dorothy returned to Hong Kong where she served from 1946 until 1982 as a teacher and an administrator in Maryknoll staffed schools.
In 1982 at the age of 74, Sister Dorothy returned to the Maryknoll New York, where she continued to give service in accord with her health. In 1990 Sister Dorothy Walsh entered Maryknoll Residential Care where she spent the remaining four years of her life.
Sister Dorothy will be remembered fondly by former students
and friends and the Maryknoll Sisters community in Hong Kong.
