Sr. De FIGUEIREDO, Emilia FDCC
Canossian Nonagenarian Passes Away
On 18 October 1956 Mother Emilia De Figueiredo left this world full of merits and good works.
Mother Emilia was born in Hong Kong 91 years ago of a well-known Portuguese family. From her pious and fervent parents she inherited that spirit of faith and sacrifice that accompanied her throughout her long laborious life as a Canossian nun.
When 22 years old she left her beloved family to join the Canossian Congregation in which she has always been an active and well-known member. From the very first years of her religious life, she dedicated her rich resources of mind and heart to the many poor children that frequented the then free school of Bridges Street. She was subsequently transferred to other schools of the Congregation, always working with indefatigable zeal and fervent devotion. Her last field of Apostolate was Aberdeen where she worked from 1925 to 1938. There she gave the best of herself to God in the person of His poor. She was the true evangelic Fisherman among the fishermen. She was the first Canossian Sister who went from junk to junk to bring with some material relief, the much greater gift of the true faith in God. It was during her stay as Superior in Aberdeen that the School there prospered and developed into a proper educational establishment. The fisher folk of the district regarded her as mother, teacher, consoler, and guide in their arduous life, and went to her any time of the day. Till recently these simple people came often to visit their benefactress relating to her their fishing enterprises family news, and little troubles. But the passing of years left its mark even on Mother Emilia, who although reluctantly, left her field of activity to enter the Canossian infirmary. Here her zeal for souls became even more intense and if she could no more speak to souls of God, she spoke very earnestly to God of souls. Her devotion to Jesus in the Bl. Sacrament was her remarkable characteristic. For many years she was the first to go to Him in the early morning, and the last to leave Him in the evening. Even during there last months when her sufferings became very great, Mother Emilia was seen almost dragging herself to the Infirmary chapel and there remained in profound adoration. Mother Emilia had certainly many things to tell Him Divine Spouse whom she had always loved with tender a sincere devotion.
From Heaven, undoubtedly Mother Emilia will continue devoted
care for the poor who she had always protected, for her affectionate relatives
who she sincerely loved, for her congregation which she deep esteemed and
