Sister Joan Catherine O’Hagan, M.M.
Maryknoll Sister Joan Catherine O’Hagan, Veteran missionary in Hong Kong, Manchuria, South China, the island of Mauritius and Taiwan, died at the Maryknoll Sisters’ Centre in New York on 27 January 2001. Interment took place at the Centre a few days later. She was 83 years old and had celebrated her 60 anniversary of religious life in February 2000.
Sister began her missionary life in 1946 in the former Manchuria, then came to South China and Hong Kong.
She did pastoral work in Hong Kong from the early 1950s to 1962, when she was assigned to the Hakka-speaking areas of Miaoli, Towfen and Tahu, Taiwan.
In all the areas where she ministered, she was involved in pastoral ministry, visiting homes and the sick in homes and hospitals, carrying on adult education and counseling those in need. During her forty-odd years of mission work in Chinese ethnic areas, her flexibility and willingness to go where the need was greatest, as well as her ability to speak more than one Chinese dialect, made her an ideal missionary, easy to approach by her Sisters and the people with whom she worked.
When she retired to the Maryknoll Sisters’ Centre in 1988 she
continued to work in Maryknoll Archives until a year before her death. Maryknoll
Sisters of the Hong Kong - Macau Region ask your prayers for the repose of the
