Death of Sister Margherita Valsecchi

The Advent Hymns were on our lips, our minds with the Saviour expectations of old, our hearts longing for His approaching coming, on Christmas Day, when our very words: “O come Divine Messiah” became a reality of life, especially for the Sisters at Caritas Medical Centre, when they saw our Sister Margaret suddenly collapse, and in a few minutes, she was already in the eternal embrace of her Beloved! It was in the late evening of 18 December 1990. She was aged 87.

Margaret was born at Costamasnaga, near Milan, Italy on 21 November 1908. A delicate child, she used to say, but surrounded with great love and care she throve and grew strong, with a firm desire and will to spend all her life for the coming of God’s Kingdom, in Mission lands.

At 21, she joined the Canossian Novitiate for the Missions and having completed her religious training, at Vimercate and Pavia, with her Profession in 1932, she was happy to realize her missionary vocation by being one in the group destined for Hong Kong. Here she was to spend all her long life as an ardent apostle, at first with she education of the very young at “Sacred Hearts” - Caine Road and Shaukiwan - at St. Francis, Wanchai, supervising in turn the boarders or the blind pupils, visiting, in her free time, the sick in the city hospitals, so squalid and miserable in those days. Her visits were meant to reach the souls and the Holy Spirit had put on her tongue the Chinese and English languages, which she spoke with ease.

Sister Margaret could be trusted in hard situations: for instance, during the last war she was requested to stay at the Carmel with a group of orphans as a way of protection against the invading troops. A few times she temporarily look the place of Superiors, absent or departed.

For every task her ever ready, humble attitude was always: “Here is the handmaid of the Lord!” And this was the reply she gave, after retiring from the school, when obedience asked her to be the “Home Sister” of the Student Nurses at Caritas Medical Center. She was still energetic and full of zeal, and for 15 years she carried on her role of watchful, loving and caring mother, ever ready to support with an encouraging word, with her winning smile, with her motherly gesture. The patients in the Outpatient department and in the wards welcomed her as an angel of comfort, radiating the light and warmth of the wise virgin, whose lamp was brightly burning … burning away for others till the very end … when the Bridegroom whispered: “Come, my Beloved one, Come!”

We will miss you, Sister Margaret. We will miss your presence, your sisterly concern, your smile … but, above all, we will miss your youthful enthusiasm in the Lord’s service and in the community.

The patients in the Out-patient Department will ask for you. What shall we tell them? “I will pray for you!”, this will be your reply. So, dear Sister Margaret, please continue to pray for us.
