Death of Mother Silvia De Vitali
Canossian Daughter of Charity
R.I.P.

Sad news from the Canossian General House Rome, reached us on Saturday morning, 22 August 1987. Mother Silvia De Vitali, who was on a few months of home-leave and was supposed to return next months, had died of a heart - attacked on Saturday, early morning, Italy time. Returning from a pilgrimage to Assisi, she stopped at Loppiano for a visit to the “Focolarini” whom she loved dearly. At nights she felt seriously ill and was taken to a hospital in Florence, but a few hours later she breathed out her fervent spirit in a conscious acceptance of God’s loving Will saying: “Even in this I love you, I love you much, my Lord.” Her remains returned to Loppiano and a Requiem Mass was concelebrated in the “Focolarini’s” chapel. After this her body was transported to her native place: Melegnano, Milan.

There Mother Silvia was born, 74 years ago, in a family of deep-rooted faith, which gave to the Church a priest as well. Having completed her education with the Canossian Sisters, she felt God’s call to follow Him in Missionland and joined the Canossian Novitiate for the Missions.

After her First Vows, she reached Hankow, the land of her vocation, in 1936, while the Nippo-Chinese war was raging. She herself experienced the terrible consequences of the war when the hospital was bombed and she too was buried under the debris with other Sisters, four of whom were victims.

In 1951 the red-wave carried her to Hong Kong. Here she gave a helping hand in St. Mary’s Canossian College till, in 1954, her nursing skill was requested for the foundation of Canossian houses in Japan. She returned to Hong Kong in 1966 and worked for years at Caritas Medical Centre, Kowloon, and for some time at Canossa Hospital, Hong Kong.

The many out-patients she contacted both hospital will certainly remember Mother Silvia’s welcoming smile and encouraging words and she, from heaven, will pray for them all and for the dear Hong Kong.

Through these columns, the Canossian Sisters in Hong Kong send hearty thanks to the “Focolarini” for their sisterly help in such distress.
