NG Fung-Wan, Theresa OP
First Dominican Sister to Die in Hong Kong
Sister Theresa Ng Fung Wan
On 26 September 1977 in Queen Mary Hospital, a Dominican Sister went to her eternal rest with the Lord.
Sister Theresa Ng Fung Wan, O.P., only daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Ng Yau Man, of Hong Kong, graduated from Rosaryhill School in 1970, and entered the Dominican Order of the Missionaries of the Rosary the following year, at the Novitiate in Zamboanga, Philippines.
Of an exceptional character, Sister Theresa lived intensely and fully, and as happy as any person can be this side of Heaven, from the first day in the convent. She loved the Congregation and was never happier than when with her Sisters, living the spirit of the great Founder, St. Dominic.
But God, in His infinite Wisdom had other plans for this Sister; and she fell ill with the malignant illness that ended her temporal life. Sister Theresa was, to the very last, herself, that is, conscious of the shortness of life; and so, putting herself in the hands of God in whatever she did, which was not much at all to the eyes of the world, she simply fell asleep in His arms. Sister Theresa died peacefully in the Lord, at the very moment when two Dominican Sisters, who had arrived from Macao some days before, were able to be at her bedside in Queen Mary Hospital.
On the Day of the burial, six more of her fellow Sister came from Macao, to form a cortege from the Universal Funeral Home, in Kowloon to Rosaryhill School in Hong Kong.
Requiem Mass with the body present was concelebrated by the Dominican Fathers at the Rosaryhill Chapel, where a good number of students and a group of Girl Guides, members of the Legion of Mary, relatives and friends, were present. Needless to say, her parents, the brothers, their wives and an only niece, were prominent in the congregation.
The burial took place at St. Michael Cemetery, Happy Valley. Father Lionel Xavier, O.P., officiated.
Sister Theresa Ng, O.P., was only 27 years old, but she lived
consciously and so, fully, her Religious life. As a consequence of which, Our
Lord plucked His little flower, and transferred her to His garden of delights.
May she rest in the peace and love of her Lord and Spouse!
