Death of Father Aniceto Castanon, O.P.
R.I.P.
About 8 o’clock in the morning of 11 June 1975
Father Aniceto Castanon, OP was found dead, in his room by his confreres, the Dominican
Fathers of St. Joseph House, in Kowloon Tong. He was still clutching the holy rosary in
his hands, but his body was already cold. He had died of heart attack in the early hours
of the morning.
Father A. Castanon was born in Linares, province of Asturias, Spain, on 9 March 1915, and
he was only 21 when he arrived Hong Kong in 1936 to pursue his ecclesiastical studies at
the Dominican House of Studies, Rosaryhill. Four years later he was ordained priest at
Rosaryhill.
He spent most of his 35 years of priesthood in Manila, but on three different occasions he
was assigned to Hong Kong: first in 1948, as assistant to the Master of Students and
professor of Theology in Rosaryhill; in 1952, when he was elected prior of Rosaryhill, a
post that he hold for two consecutive terms until 1958; and in January 1974, when he
became a member of the small community of Dominican Fathers in Kowloon Tong as Provincial
Secretary of the Spanish Dominican Missions.
After his election as Provincial Superior in 1969, Father Castanon established the
Dominican House of St. Joseph in Kowloon Tong, where he was to spend the last days of his
life on earth.
