Mgr. Vath Receives Grand Cross of German Order of Merit

His Lordship the Bishop and about 250 other guests, including many of the most prominent leaders of apostolic and welfare working Hong Kong, attended a reception held by Dr. F.J. Bach, Consul General of the German Federal Republic for the presentation of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of German to Mgr. C.H. Vath, President of Caritas Hong Kong and Far East Representative of Misereor.

Befort presenting the cross, Dr. Bach spoke as follows:

In his encyclical Pacem in Terris, Pope John XXIII called on all people in this world to combine their resources to fight poverty and misery wherever they exist. This call has not been ignored. Strong forces rallied in every country to help where help was needed. Millions of dollars were collected; food, goods, medicines and clothing donated, and the war against poverty, misery and diseases started. This fight against one of the most dangerous enemies of a peaceful world cannot be won with material aid alone. More decisive are the men and women, who with courage and ingenuity direct this fight and devote their lives entirely to the betterment of living conditions and the eradication of extreme hardships of the poor. We in Hong Kong are most fortunate to have in Mgr. Vath one of the most outstanding, courageous and energetic leaders in our endeavours not only to better the everyday life of our not so fortunate fellow-citizens but to encourage them to help themselves by learning and improving their skills and knowledge in their individual trades.

As Director and later President of the Catholic Centre, as founder and President of Caritas Hong Kong, as the representative of the German Bishops Social Aid Fund in the Far East and as Vice-President of Caritas International the Right Reverend Mgr. Vath had the vision and far sight to see beyond his task to provide for Everyday needs, and began to build houses and schools, to construct training centres and other educational facilities in order to prepare the poor and the handicapped better for modern industrial life. I do not intend to give you a more specific account of what Mgr. Vath did not only for Hong Kong but for the whole of the Far East. You all know him well and you are perhaps even better qualified to praise his merits. But I am very proud today to be able to tell Mgr. Vath that his hard work, his indefatigable efforts and his meritorious initiative has not been unnoticed. The President of the Federal Republic of German has honoured Mgr. Vath’s achievements in bestowing upon him one of the highest decorations Germany can award. The documents of investiture which I have the honour of presenting now to Mgr. Vath reads as follows:

In recognition of the exceptional merits which Monsignor Vath rendered to Germany and the German People, I bestow on Monsignor Carl Vath, President of the Catholic Centre, Hong Kong, The German Order of Merit. Bonn, the 15 January 1964. The President of the Federal Republic of Germany Lubke.

It gives me great pleasure to decorate Mgr. Vath now, who by the way was recently made a Domestic Prelate to His Holiness the Pope, with the Grand Cross of the German Order of Merit.

Dr. Bach then invested Mgr. Vath with the cross and Mgr. Vath replied as follows:

I hope that no one expects me to pretend that I am not deeply gratified to receive the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. I am deeply gratified and I am deeply grateful to the Federal Government.

My gratification is doubled when I remember that the Cross was conferred at the same time upon the Consul General, Dr. Franz Josef Bach, who really has merited the Order of Merit in the highest degree. It is indeed an honour to be associated with him in such a context. For myself, the name “Grand Cross of the Order of Merit” is a source of embarrassment. Here indeed is the Cross – and a grand cross it is – but where are the merits? This very thought however, brings home to me the real nature of today’s ceremony. As Far East representative of Misereor I do, in some sense, represent the generosity of the German people, of the German Catholics in particular, and the far sighted wisdom of the German Bishops. As chairman and President of Caritas Hong Kong I do, in some sense, represent the generosity of all who, whether in Hong Kong or abroad, support the great works of Caritas, and the many devoted workers who, whether as volunteers or staff-members, labour under the leadership of our Bishop to carry out the great Caritas programme of far-sighted Charitable work.

In all this there is a great treasury of merit, merit that is not mine.

It is a great and humbling privilege to represent, however unworthily, so many good people so much good work, In this spirit, I accept the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, gratefully and unabashed.

Death of Msgr. Charles VATH
R.I.P.

President of Caritas International
s: Founder of Caritas Hong Kong Msgr. Charles Herman Vath, President of Caritas Internationals, Priest of the Diocese of Hong Kong, President emeritus of Caritas Hong Kong, former director of the Catholic Centre, Hong Kong and former editor of the Sunday Examiner, died of cancer on Sunday, 18 August 1974, at his residence at Kranuechal, near Bonn, Germany, aged 64.

Msgr. Gabriel Lam, Vicar Capitular, and Father F. Lerda, P.I.M.E., President of Caritas - Hong Kong, have gone to Germany to take part in the funeral on 23 August.

Msgr. Vath was born at Niederlahnstein, Rhineland, Germany, on 12 October 1909. His father was a professional artist. His mother was a leading member of the Centrum, the Catholic political party that played so large a part in German affairs in pre-Nazi Germany.

The young Carl Vath came to China in the late 1920s as a businessman. He prospered, rising high in the great German firm of Bayer
s, working in Shanghai, Canton and other places in China. In Shanghai and Canton he was outstanding as a hard-working members of whatever parish he belonged.

ORDAINED AGED 42
In 1948, he resigned his business posts and entered the Beda College, Rome, a seminary for late vocations. He was incardinated in the Diocese of Hong Kong in 1950 and was ordained priest in the Lateran Basilica on 8 March 1952.

1952 was the Marian Year. The first major work entrusted here to the newly arrived Father Vath was the organization of the Marian Year celebration in the Caroline Hill stadium, the first of a now long line of such celebrations in the diocese.

CATHOLIC CENTRE
Soon after this, he was made Director of the Catholics Centre, which was then in a precarious financial position. The way in which he met the problems of the Catholic Centre foreshadowed the way in which he would deal with greater problems in days to come. Instead of economising, he enlarged the staff of the Catholic Centre and remodeled the cramped quarters it then occupied in the old King
s Building. This bold policy succeeded. Its success may have owed something to his business experience; but it owed more to his firm trust in Providence. Throughout his priestly life he acted on the principle that if any work was needed for the glory of God, the material support needed would come from somewhere.

When it was decided to demolish King
s Building, Father Vath supervised the temporary move to the old Union House and the permanent move to Grand Building. The planning of this permanent home was his work throughout. The Catholic Centre Chapel, with its ingenious surmounting of the difficulties offered by structural pillars, is a lasting monument to an artistic gift inherited from his artist father.

In January 1961, he was appointed Papal Chamberlain to the Pope, with the title of Monsignor.

In March of the same year, he handed over the directorship of the Catholic Centre to father (later Bishop) Francis Hsu and took up the post of Bishop
s Delegate for Cultural, Social and Charitable Matters.

CARITAS HONG KONG
From early in his priesthood, he had fostered a hope of founding a diocesan social and charitable organization that would provide a vent for the Christian charity of the diocese. At first this was little more than an aspiration whispered in confidence to his closer friends. His strong drive quickly turned this dream into a reality. Caritas - Hong Kong started in a very small way, but it grew. It was affiliated to Caritas International
s in 1955, and in 1958 it was constituted the official Catholic Social Welfare Bureau for the diocese.

Once Msgr. Vath had been released from the cares of the Catholic Centre, Caritas - Hong Kong grew very rapidly. Today, the Caritas Medical Centre, Caritas Social Centres in Caine Road, Boundary Street, Tsuen Wan, Kennedy Town, Aberdeen and elsewhere with all their multitudinous works, Caritas Youth Centres and Clinics and many other works of Caritas are monuments to Msgr. Vath
s zeal and energy.

MISEREOR
In addition to his work for Hong Kong. Msgr. Vath had also accepted the onerous duties of Far Eastern representative of Misereor, the German Catholic Bishop social aid agency. He took this post very seriously, constantly travelling to examine proposed schemes on the spot and to make sure that work financed by Misereor was being properly carried out.

In 1968, Bishop Bianchi, at the request of the German Bishops, released Msgr. Vath from his Hong Kong responsibilities that he might devote himself to Misereor affairs all over the world. Accordingly he transferred his residence to Germany in that year.

CARITAS INTERNATIONAL
S
In 1970, he was elected president of Caritas International
s, the central social aid agency of the Catholic Church, Controversy over aid to sufferers in Biafra had weakened this agency. In his four years as president, Msgr. Vath renewed its energies and enabled it to render immediate aid in disaster areas and to intensify its efforts to meet stubborn chronic needs.

From the late 1950 onward he had intermittent ill health. In the summer of 1973 a new affliction, cancer, brought him near to death. He rallied slowly and was able to preside at the annual meeting of Caritas International
s in the spring of this year, The rally was deceptive. A second attack quickly proved fatal.

The Federal Republic of Germany conferred the Cross of Merit on Msgr. Vath in 1960 and the Grand Cross of Merit in 1964. The Pope made him a Domestic Prelate in 1963 and a Protonotary Apostolic in 1967. The Queen Conferred an honorary Commandership of the British Empire on him in 1970. He valued these honours, but did not overvalue them.

MAN: PRIEST: FRIEND
This account of Msgr. Vath
s life is largely a list of outward achievements. It says too little about the priest who grieved when he found that organization and not simple pastoral duty was to be his priestly lot.

The deep bond that persists between Msgr. Vath and the very large number of persons who worked with him bears testimony to the warmth of his human kindness. While most competent and efficient in organisation and administration, he was always most kindly and extremely generous in his dealing with people. Those who loved him best were those who had found themselves carried by his enthusiasm into sharing his overwork.

For many years he had poor health and almost continuous suffering. During his last months he had to endure great pain and agony which he bore heroically, and most cheerfully, One of his last acts was to record a long message of thanks and goodbye to his friends and co-workers in Hong Kong. This tape made it clear that in his last moments he was thinking not of the work he had done but of the kindness he had received and the joy he had found in the generous comradeship of those who worked with him.

Part of Chinese Church History
German Press Release on Death of Msgr. VATH

The following is the press release on the death of Msgr. Vath issued in Germany.

Part of Chinese Church history was the obituary description of Msgr. Charles Hermann Vath, President of Caritas Internationals, given by Msgr. Teusch, Episcopal Vicar of Cologne.

Msgr. Vath died on 18 August 1974, in Kranchuel, aged 64, his obsequies were celebrated at Moch, and he was buried at Kranchuel on Friday, 23 August.

At the Requiem mass in the Chapel at Much, the chief celebrate was Bishop Franz Hengsbach of Essen, which is the partner-diocese of Hong Kong in which he had spent many years. The concelebrants were Msgr. Gabriel Lam, Vicar Capitular of Hong Kong, Father Francis Lerda, President of Caritas Hong Kong, Msgr. Carlo Bayer, Msgr. Dr. Georg Huessler, President of the Gemnan Caritas, Msgr. Gottfried Dossing, leader of Misereor, and Dr. Nikolaus Frank of Caritas International
s.

Among those present at the funeral were the Apostolic Numcio to Germany, Archbishop Bafile, Cardinal Joseph Frings, Former Archbishop of Clolgne, numerous representatives of Caritas Hong Kong, Caritas Internationsl
s and the Caritas organizations of various countries in Europe and outside and numerous representatives of the diocese of Cologne and Essen. The chief mourners were Msgr. Vaths sister, Dr. Anneliese Schindler-Vath, and a Chinese, Lau Bong, who had served Msgr. Vath for many years.

In the homily, Msgr. Teusch of Cologne spoke of the extra-ordinary life of Msgr. Vath, who after many years of successful business life in China was ordained priest in 1952 at the age of 43. Having seen need in Hong Kong, he saw and did not pass by. That, Msgr. Teusch said, could well have been his motto. His example left its mark on the active faith of the 262,000 Catholics of Hong Kong.
