Long life of service to Chinese people ends

Father Michael Joseph McKeirnan MM, of Pomeroy, Washington, the United States of America (US), died on Tuesday, 22 September 2009, at St. Teresa’s Residence, Ossining, New York, where he had been living since 2005. He was 95-years-old, and had been a Maryknoll priest for 68 years.

Father McKeirnan, who retired in 2005 at the age of 91, most recently ministered to Philippine overseas workers and taught catechism in Kowloon, Hong Kong, where he had worked since 1956.

As Maryknoll’s regional vicar, he supervised the society’s mission work in Hong Kong from 1960 to 1966. He was pastor of St. Peter’s Parish, Aberdeen from 1966 to 1968, and was later director of the Bishop Ford Centre, Kowloon, for more than two decades.

Born on 20 September 1914, Father McKeirnan attended Holy Rosary School from1920 to 1928. He graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Mountain View, California, in 1934 and entered Maryknoll in the same years.

He was ordained a priest on 22 June 1941 and immediately assigned to Maryknoll’s mission in Wuzhou (Wuchow), Southern China. Travelling to his assignment, he was interned by the occupying Japanese forces in Hong Kong and held for nine months. After his release, he worked in Wuchow until the Japanese military took the town.

Forced to flee, he moved out with personnel of the US Air Force and served as a temporary chaplain until the end of World War II. Father McKeirnan then returned to the Wuzhou mission and remained there until 1949, when he was appointed pastor of St. Theresa Chinese Mission in Chicago from 1949 to 1956.

Father McKeirnan is survived by his brother, Joseph McKeirnan, his sisters: Sister Agnes McKeirnan MM, Mary Moran and several nieces and nephews.

On the occasion of his 65th jubilee, Father McKeirnan remarked that “as a missionary, my greatest fulfillment has been to instruct a person who has never known God and then in baptism, see that person enjoy the infinite mercy and eternal love of God the Father.”

The funeral Mass was celebrated at Queen of Apostles Chapel, Maryknoll Mission Centre, Ossining, New York (NY), on 29 September, followed by burial at Maryknoll Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Father McKeirnan’s name may be made to the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, PO Box 302, Maryknoll, NY, USA, 10454.
