Sister Gemma Chow, Canossian

Sister Gemma was born in Hong Kong in 1932. Throughout her childhood and youthful life she enjoyed her schooling with the sisters at St. Mary’s Canossian College. She entered the Canossian Novitiate in 1952, made her First Vows at Christmas in 1955 and her Final Commitment in Rome in 1961. After her return to Hong Kong, she served in different schools as teacher in Religious Education and Home Economics, later as administrator. She also served a few years in Taiwan as social worker in the youth hostel, the youth centre and in the parish, besides being supervisor of the kindergarten and a friend of their parents. Where Sister Gemma worked, nobody could ever felt left out!

It seems that the Lord clearly wanted to have Sister Gemma at Caritas Social Centre, Aberdeen, for she was transferred there no less than three times to offer her services. On her last Saturday of life, just one week before she died, she returned to Aberdeen to say “Goodbye” to all her colleagues… Then on 17 June 1989 at 10pm she passed away in Canossa Hospital, surrounded by the loving care of her dear Sisters.

Endowed with a strong apostolic zeal, enriched by a prophetic religious spirit, vocational and born with a creative talented mind, Sister Gemma fulfilled beautifully her conational commitment by having a great love for God and for the most deprived brethren, especially those who could not succeed academically. Her health was never too good, but she would never bend her will in front of sufferings or difficulties. When she knew of the existence of the cancer within herself, she optimistically worked better and harder then usual, for she wished to treasure what little time was left to her to do good on earth. During her stay in hospital she visited the sick whenever she was able and encouraged the terminal patients with her word of life and examples. Those who entered her sick room were deeply edified and received more encouragement from her for their life than they gave consolation to her.

Dear Sister Gemma, from where you are, please do continue your work for your suffering brethren in China.
