Born in Halifaz, Nova Scotia on 10 January 1919 Grace Catherine was one of three sons and four daughters born to the late Dennis P and Cecelia Bellefontaince Doherty.

Grace graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA and Boston Normal School obtaining a Teachers Certificate in 1920. She became a naturalised citizen of the United States on 25 June 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Grace entered Maryknoll from St. Columkille Parish, Boston on 24 September 1924 and received the name Sister Mary Tarsicius. She made her first vows on 30 April 1927 at Maryknoll, New York and final vows on 30 April 1930 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Grace served in Hawaii from 1927 to 1937, teaching in primary schools in Punahou and Kalihi and serving as regional Superior from 1931 to 1937. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Immaculate Heart College in Hollywood, California in 1938 and returned to Hawaii in 1939 where she served as Superior and Principal at Maui Children’s Home.

In 1943 she became superior and Principal of the Kalihi Kai School. Grace attended the University of Hawaii from 1944 to 1946 when she obtained a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.

She was a delegate to the General Chapter in 1946 and following that was assigned to Hong Kong, where she taught at both the Maryknoll Convent School and the Maryknoll Sisters School, Secondary Section until 1956. She descried this as a very rewarding period as she made close, lasting friendships with the women she taught.

From 1956 to 1965 she taught at Rogers College at Maryknoll, New York and supervised practive teachers. From 1965 to 1969 she taught in a school in Jimienez, Mindinao, Philippine Islands where she again taught and supervised practice teachers.

After a short period at Maryknoll, New York in 1969, she went again to Hong Kong where she tutored private students until her assignment to the Senior Unit in Monrovia, California in 1972.

Assigned to the Centre Main House Community in 1995 Sister Grace enjoyed active participation until a short time before her death.
